A short history of the Saxophone
1814 - Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax was born on November 6th, in Dinant, Belgium. He studied instrument making with his father, Charles-Joseph (1791-1865)
1842 - Sax establishes in Paris. - June 12th - Hector Berlioz, a close friend of Sax, writes an article in the Journal des Débats, describing the new invention of Sax : the saxophone.
1844 - The Saxophone is exposed for the 1st time at the Exposition Industrielle de Paris.
1844 - Februar 3rd - Berlioz conducts a concert featuring an arrangement of his choral work "Chant Sacré", including a low saxophone (baritone or bass, probably in C)
December - The saxophone (Bass) is introduced in the orchestra in Jean-Georges Kastner opera "Le dernier Roi de Juda" at the Paris Conservatory.
1845 - Sax proposes a complete rebuilding of the french military bands, remplacing oboes, bassoons, and horns with saxhorns and saxophones in Bb and Eb, thus producing a more homogenous and richer sound. His idea is a success.
1846 - Sax is granted patent for the saxophone familly in Paris.
1846 - The first saxophone class is opended in the "Gymnase Militaire Musical" and the professor is the bassoonist Jean-François-Barthélémy Cokken. Cokken writes his «Méthode complète de saxophone». The class will close after 16 months with the revolution of februar 1848.
1846 - Jean-Georges Kastner "Variations Faciles et Brillantes" for solo alto saxophone & piano ; «Saxophone sextet» for 2 soprano, alto, 2 basses and contrebass (in C and in F). Both pieces published in his «Méthode Complète et raisonnée de Saxophone».
1852 - Solo (Sop) in «Santa Claus Symphony» by William Henry Fry
- Solo in «Le juif errant» by Fromental Halevy
1856 - First bankrupt of the Sax factory.
1858 - Sax becomes Professor of Saxophone in the militairy department of the Paris Conservatory.
1858 - Jean-Baptiste Singelée (1812-1875) writes the "First saxophone Quartet" (Op 53) of history, and the two first «solos de concert» for the Paris Conservatoiry’s Prize : "Concerto Op 57" (sop./ten.), and "Fantaisie" (bar.)
- «The Royal Album» by Ali ben Soualle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) is premiered by the composer in London.
1859 - Birth of Sax’s first son, Adolphe-Edouard (who will later inherit his trade).
1861 - Wagner, instead of 12 horns, asks for saxophones and saxhorns in the orchestra pit for the Paris premiere of his opera Tannhauser.
1861 - «Caprice et variations» for Eb saxophone by Jean-Baptiste Arban (dedicated to A. Sax).
1862 - "Fantaisie sur un Thème Original" for alto sax by Jules Demerssemann (1833-1866) dédicated to Henri Wuille.
1864 - Solo for Baritone sax in «L’Africaine» by Meyerbeer (cr. Louis Mayeur)
1864 - «Fantaisie Op 102» by Jean-Baptiste Singelée for sax S & P°.
1865 - «Ave Maria» by Jules Demersseman (for Soprano voice, A sax, Tb, bass saxhorn Bb and contrabass saxhorn in C)
1866 - Sax’s patent expires - The Millereau company patents the Saxophone-Millereau, comprising a F# side key - Buffet-Crampon begins producing Sax -patented saxophones.
1867 - Nazaire Beeckman becomes Professor of Saxophone in the Royal Brussels Conservatory.
1867 - Camille Saint-Saëns wins the Grand Prix de Rome with his cantata «Les Noces de Prométhée» with a saxophone.
1868 - A sax A solo in «Hamlet» by Ambroise Thomas
1868 - Gautrot (Pierre Louis & C°) imagins a screwed pads system and a leak-free mechanism in the keys.
1869 - «Daniel», dramatic fantasy for A sax & P° by Hyacinthe Klosé
1870 - Adolphe Sax class in the Conservatoire de Paris is closed (the militatry students are mobilized for the war). It will only reopen in 1942 with Marcel Mule.
1871 - Gustave Poncelet becomes Professor of Saxophone in the Royal Brussels Conservatory after Beeckman.
1872 - Premiere of Georges Bizet theater music for Daudet’s drama «L'Arlésienne», for 26 instruments. Due to the fiasco of the play, il adapts it for concert as a «Suite pour orchestre». The «2nd suite» will be adapted by Ernest Guiraud in 1879.
1873 - Adolphe Sax is bankrupt for the second time.
1873 - Patrick Gilmore (1829-1892) uses the saxophone in a military band for the 1st time in New York.
1875 - Goumas patents a key system for saxophones similar to the Boehm system of the clarinet.
1876 - Solo in the ballet «Sylvia» by Léo Délibes
1877 - Hyacinthe Klosé - "Méthode Complète de Saxophone" - "Méthode Élémentaire" (A/T). Versions for B (1879) et S (1881).

1880 - Amédée Couesnon takes over the Gautrot company, in Château-Thierry

1881- Sax extends his original patent by extending the bell to include low Bb & A ; he also extends the high register to F# & G with the use of a fourth octave key.

1884 - «L’auréole» fantaisie for A & P° by Bouillon.
1885 - First saxophone built in the USA by Gus Buescher, after the Sax patent.
1885 - 4 saxes in «Hulda» opera by César Franck
1886 - L'Association Des Ouvriers invents a right hand trill key of C, and a half-hole system for the first fingers of both hands.
1887 - Evette et Schaeffer proposes an improvement of G# such as the key can be maintained while the other fingers of right hand move, improvement of side F#, invention of Bb plateau, addition of a low Bb - L'Association Des Ouvriers invents the tuning ring.
1888 - Gustave Charpentier includes 2 saxes SA in «La vie du poète» and one A in «Impressions d’Italie»
1888 - Lecomte invents the automatic octave key, the passage rolls between low Eb and C. Conn Produces its first series of «Wonder» saxophones , conceived by Eduard Lefèbre. Gus Buescher quits Conn to found his own company.
1890 - The first Conn Band Instruments saxophones are produiced by Gus Buescher
1890 - First known recordings of the saxophone

1901 - 29th January, the «Divertissement espagnol» by Charles Loeffler is the first of the commissions premiered by Elise Hall at the Copley Hall of Boston.
1901 - Elise Hall commissions a "Rapsodie Mauresque" to Claude Debussy.
1901 - Birth of Marcel Mule in Aube (Orne, France) on 24th june.
1902 - Paul Gilson (1865-1942) writes for Elise Hall what he thinks to be the "First Concerto" for saxophone.
1903 - The score of "Symphonia Domestica" by Richard Strauss includes 4 (optionnal) saxophones in C & in F : Soprano, alto, baritone and bass.
1903 - Elise Hall commissions the "Choral Varié" by Vincent D'Indy, which she will premiere on January 4rth, 1904 in Copley Hall, Boston.
1903 - "Légende" by André Caplet for sax & 9 instruments (to Elise Hall).
1904 - Birth of Coleman Hawkins in Saint Joseph, Missouri.
1905 : Eugène Van Doren opens the Vandoren reed manufacture.

1911 - H. Benne Henton is the 1st American to play a solo with altissimo notes (cadence in "Eleven O'clock")

1914 - 1st presence of saxophone in jazz bands. (Sam Dutry, John Joseph, Luis Russell, Paul Barnes) - Creation of the Minstrels group «The Brown Brothers saxophone sextet», which popularise saxophone in the american public with recordings such as : Bullfrog Blues, Chicken Walk, etc.
1914 - «Les Dionysiaques» by Florent Schmitt for wind band (with AATTBB,Bs) premiered by the Garde républicaine in 1925.

1928 - Conn produces his models of F saxophones : the Mezzo-soprano and the Conn-O-Sax.
1928 - Marcel Mule establishes the Quatuor de la Garde Republicaine de Paris with members of the band.

1935 - Solo of T sax in the ballet «Roméo & Juliet» by Serge Prokofiev. The ballet will not be premiered, neither at Kirov, nor at Bolchoï. Prokofiev will adapt 2 dance suites in 1936 and a 3rd in 1946. Premiere of the ballet in Brno, 1938.
1936 - Birth of Albert Ayler in Cleveland.
1936 - Selmer produces the «Balanced action» series by redrawing the low-notes plateau system, and placing the low keys on the right of the instrument.

1949 - Gerry Mulligan and Lee Konitz participate to the album "Birth of the Cool" by Miles Davis - Birth of Michael Brecker in Philadelphia.

1953 - Larry Teal appointed Professor of Saxophone at University of Michigan, Dearborn.

1954 - Yanagisawa begins its saxophone production (with the T3 tenor).

1955 - Premiere of «Prelude Fugue and Riffs» by Leonard Bernstein. The central fugue is entirely dedicated to the sax quintet (AATTB). Commissioned by Woody Hermann (1949), Benny Goodman will premiere a modified version.

1956 - Frederick Hemke is the first foreigner saxophonist to be granted First Prize of Saxophone in the Paris Conservatory.
